How to Stop Amazon from Collecting Personal Data on a Paperwhite
One of the things that you may not be aware of is the fact that Amazon collects personal data from your Kindle Paperwhite as you use it. This data is then used to bring you ads and suggestions about relevant content. This article shows you the available Kindle Paperwhite privacy options. So, how do you stop Amazon from using your Kindle to gather information about your reading habits and such?
Why Amazon Gathers Personal Data
Amazon gives the following as the reasons why it gathers personal data from Kindle Paperwhite users;
We use data about your use of this device to provide customized marketing offers you might enjoy and to improve our products and services for all users. You can opt out of allowing us to use personal data collected by the operating system of this device for these purposes by disabling this setting. Disabling this setting will not affect; (1) your ability to use the features of this device, as we will continue to collect and process your data to deliver those features to you; or (2) whether you receive marketing offers, though those offers may be less relevant to you.
How to stop Amazon from collecting personal reading data from your device
In order to stop amazon from using your device to give you customized marketing offers, all that you need to do is the following;
- Go to “Settings,” on your Kindle Paperwhite. You can do this by clicking on the three dots to the top right of your screen and then choosing “Settings.”
- In “Settings,” click on Device Options
- Next, click on “Advanced Options.”
- From there, click on Privacy
- Finally, you need to click on “Disable.”
How does this affect the offers that appear on my device
We have previously produced an article in which we show you what to expect should you choose to go for a Kindle Paperwhite that comes with offers. When you disable Amazon’s ability to collect personal information, it does not mean you will stop getting the offers. What will only happen is that you will begin getting offers that may not be relevant to your preferences. This probably wont be a problem for us, since we have never actually chosen a book based on Amazon’s suggestions.
