What is a local business?
A local business is one that operates within a limited geographic scale. A good example is a Restaurant. How many miles are people ever going to travel to visit a restaurant? Depending on how good the establishment in question is, this can be anything up to 3 miles. So, there is a limitation to the distances to which people will be willing to travel to visit a restaurant.
Other examples of local businesses
Restaurants are not the only examples of localized businesses. The following are other examples;
- Cafes
- Bars
- Handymen businesses
- Golf courses
Degrees of localization
There are, of course, going to be degrees to the localization of local businesses. A golf course can, conceivably, attract customers from a far wider scale than a restaurant.
Marketing for local businesses
Local businesses have to grapple with a number of unique challenges when it comes to marketing. For one thing, many of them are rather limited in their budgets. A small town electrician, as an example, will only have so much to spend on marketing.
Word-of-mouth
Word-of-mouth remains the most portent tools when it comes to advertising for local based business. Most of us will only visit a bar or a restaurant on the recommendation of an acquaintance. However, there are other ways through which you can market local businesses;
- By having a Facebook Page
- By advertising on Facebook
- Via Twitter
- On Instagram
- On YouTube
Further defining a local business
To sum up, we can say a local business is one that is able to attract customers from so many miles around it. To be frank, a local business, such as a restaurant, can actually be part of a chain.
