E-ink displays have been around for a long time, but do they really deserve all the hype that they have been getting over the past few years. This article is based on my experiences with the Kindle Paperwhite. I recently purchased the 2017 version and have been using it for a couple of months. So, are e-ink displays worth it?
- For bookaholics, e-ink displays are really worth it. I have previously been using my Google Nexus 7 tablet to read eBooks using the Kindle App. One problem with this was that I almost always ended up with a headache due to the glare that comes off the LCD display. However, this does not happen with the e-ink display on the Kindle Paperwhite. Indeed, so good is this display that there is virtually no glare when reading my books.
- E-ink displays do not need screen protectors. Along with the cover for my new Paperwhite, I also purchased a number of screen guards. Perhaps, this has something to do with the quality of the screen protectors that I bought. However, I soon discovered that the e-ink display on the Paperwhite does not require a screen protector. In fact, installing one only served to introduce glare onto the screen, thus blemishing the reading experience.
- E-ink display gadgets are relative affordable. Lets face it, the Kindle Paperwhite allows you to read books and nothing else. Of course, there is that clunky experimental browser, but who is going to do anything on that? What this means in essence is that the Paperwhite is a dedicated device that does not pretend to be something else. As as result, the gadget is manufactured at a relatively cheap price, which allow you to get it at less than $150.
- They do not consume a lot of power. An e-ink display only consumes power during the process of turning from one page to the other. Once an image is painted onto your screen, the screen consumes zero power. Of course, you are always going to have some level of power consumption, considering that some of these gadgets come with LED backlights, but this consumption is rather insignificant. In fact, you can go for a week without having to recharge the Paperwhite while using the gadget for several hours every day.
So, back to the question, are e-ink displays worth it? Well, the answer to that is a resounding yes. Truth is there is nothing really that beats an e-ink reader in terms of the reading experience.
