How to Install Joomla on Localhost using WampServer
If you are a Joomla fan, you will be pleased to know that you are not a dying breed. Joomla remains the second best CMS after WordPress. Millions of websites across the globe were made using the platform. Now, WordPress’s dominance sometimes makes it appear as if it enjoys an ultimate monopoly. However, that is really not true. Anyway, I started my own journey creating websites using Joomla. However, along the way, I lost way and defected to WordPress! I can’t really remember why I did it. So, how do you install Joomla on localhost using WampServer?
What is WampServer?
WampServer is actually a software stack that contains MySQL databse, PHP, OpenSSL and Apache web server. One of its uses is to allow people to work on their sites on localhost. This is useful. You don’t want to work on a live site, lest you put off your readers. Better to work on your website on your local machine before uploading it to your host.
Installing Joomla on localhost using WampServer
To install Joomla on localhost using WampServer, you need to follow these steps;
- Download and install WampServer on your computer.
- Download Joomla from this site.
- Copy the folder containing the Joomla files to; C:\wamp\www/
- Rename the folder to the name of your website. An example would be; “myjoomlawebsite.”
- Run WampServer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray has turned green.
- Go to your preferred browser and type in the localhost/nameofthefolder. An example would be localhost/myjoomlawebsite.
Problems when Installing Joomla on Localhost
Many people encounter problems while installing WampServer on their Windows computers. You will notice that there are issues because the icon in the system tray will either be red or yellow. If you are one of these people. In order to resolve this issue, you most probably need to make sure that there are no port conflicts on your computer. You also need to make sure that you have Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4 installed on your computer. Otherwise Wamp will not work!
