Windows sorts out screen brightness issue in Windows 10
A few weeks ago, I wrote about my move to Windows 10 version 1803 and how this had triggered a number of problems. Of all the Windows 10 version 1803 issues that were encountered then, the most annoying was the inability to change the screen brightness on my laptop. For those who are wondering, I have an HP G62 laptop that is around 8 years old, which may have contributed to the problem. Its running on a 64 bit version of Windows 10. So, what’s the solution to the Windows 10 version 1803 unable to change screen brightness issue?
Solution to Windows 10 Screen Brightness Problem
After encountering the screen brightness problem in Windows 10, I explored a number of solutions, none of which appeared to work. The problem is apparently widespread, as can be seen by the number of people who are looking for solutions online. Suggested solutions to the Windows 10 version 1803 unable to change screen brightness issue include;
- Updating Graphics drivers
- Updating PnP Monitor drivers
- Changing advanced power settings in “Power Options.”
- Using Microsoft generic graphics drivers
- Making sure that the monitor is enabled in Device Manager
The thing is, however, that none of the above solutions appeared to work in my case. Believe me, I did everything to try and regain the ability to change the brightness of my laptop’s screen. I particularly like to work with the brightness set at the lowest level, and the fact that the default setting was now glaringly bright made use of my laptop something of a pain in the something. The Solution to the Windows 10 Screen Brightness Problem, as it later turned out, had nothing to do with me or my discomfort at the excessively bright screen. Yesterday, my laptop went through another round of Windows 10 updates.
It got an update called KB4284835 (OS Build 17134.112). One of the things that the 2018-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64 based Systems (KB4284835 (OS Build 17134.112)) did was restore functionality of the screen brightness settings on my laptop!
Again, this solution had nothing to do with me! The issue probably had to do with being on a x64 machine, and all I can say now is that my eyes are relieved because I can, once again, work with the brightness on my computer set to the lowest level. Now, if only Microsoft can solve the issue of the laptop freezing when I try to restart/reboot it…!
How to get the KB4284835 update
Microsoft promises that the KB4284835 update will arrive on your machine automatically. That is what happened on my laptop. However, if it does not happen, you can still solve the Windows 10 version 1803 brightness problem by downloading and running the standalone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog site.
